Sony Acquires Gaming Headphone Brand to Enhance PlayStation Experience
Sony is building a strong line-up in the gaming category to complement the PlayStation, with the latest news confirming that it has acquired gaming headset brand Audeze this week.
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Audeze, a leading audio technology brand and pioneer of high-end gaming headsets.
The goal of this acquisition is to strengthen SIE’s efforts to continue to innovate the audio experience for PlayStation games, the company said in a statement.
Although the company has been acquired by Sony, it says Audeze will operate as an independent brand, making products for all platforms while benefiting from being part of the PlayStation ecosystem.
“We’re excited to bring Audeze’s expertise to the PlayStation ecosystem, following our progress with Tempest 3D AudioTech and Pulse 3D wireless headphones for PlayStation 5,” said Hideaki Nishino, Head of Platform Experience at SIE.
Audeze is a Californian company known for its professional audio products, including the gaming segment. However, the biggest attraction of Sony’s deal has to do with Audeze’s patented technologies and unique planar magnetic drivers, which may soon be part of Sony’s extensive audio product lineup.
“Sony Interactive offers Audeze a unique opportunity to expand our business as we continue our mission to deliver best-in-class headphones for recording professionals, audiophiles and gamers,” said Sankar Thiagasamudram, CEO of Audeze.
He also mentioned that Audeze will be a key part of Sony’s PlayStation team, which wants to enrich the gaming experience at the hardware level and fine-tune it on the game console’s main platform.
Sony is also busy adding new products to its kitty with the new PlayStation Portal portable coming out later this year. The device is designed to stream PS5 games via Wi-Fi to the device’s 8-inch IPS 1080p screen at 60 fps. It resembles the PlayStation DualSense controller; Simply put, it resembles a screen attached to the center of a shared DualSense controller.
